Beedrill just has a very very poor defense stat. 40 base def compared to 80 base spec. def. Even with the 50% STAB thundershock still does less than Quick attack which has the same base damage.
Something Shelly will note next time you fight a Beedrill.
Also Slam has a base damage output of 80. It would have OHKO'd any of the beedrill on most rolls. (Slightly less accuracy though.)
